1 καὶ ἐλάλησεν Δαυιδ τῷ κυρίῳ τοὺς λόγους τῆς ᾠδῆς ταύτης ἐν ᾗ ἡμέρᾳ ἐξείλατο αὐτὸν κύριος ἐκ χειρὸς πάντων τῶν ἐχθρῶν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐκ χειρὸς Σαουλ 2 καὶ εἶπεν κύριε πέτρα μου καὶ ὀχύρωμά μου καὶ ἐξαιρούμενός με ἐμοί 3 ὁ θεός μου φύλαξ ἔσται μου πεποιθὼς ἔσομαι ἐ{P'} αὐτῷ ὑπερασπιστής μου καὶ κέρας σωτηρίας μου ἀντιλήμπτωρ μου καὶ καταφυγή μου σωτηρίας μου ἐξ ἀδίκου σώσεις με 4 αἰνετὸν ἐπικαλέσομαι κύριον καὶ ἐκ τῶν ἐχθρῶν μου σωθήσομαι 5 ὅτι περιέσχον με συντριμμοὶ θανάτου χείμαρροι ἀνομίας ἐθάμβησάν με 6 ὠδῖνες θανάτου ἐκύκλωσάν με προέφθασάν με σκληρότητες θανάτου 7 ἐν τῷ θλίβεσθαί με ἐπικαλέσομαι κύριον καὶ πρὸς τὸν θεόν μου βοήσομαι καὶ ἐπακούσεται ἐκ ναοῦ αὐτοῦ φωνῆς μου καὶ ἡ κραυγή μου ἐν τοῖς ὠσὶν αὐτοῦ 1 And this was David’s song of thanksgiving when he found that the Lord had rescued him from the power of Saul, and from his other enemies: 2 The Lord is my rock-fastness, my bulwark, my rescuer. 3 It is my God that brings me aid, and gives me confidence; he is my shield, my weapon of deliverance, my protector, my stronghold; he it is that preserves me and frees me from wrong. 4 Praised be the Lord! When I invoke him I am secure from my enemies. 5 Death’s terrors were near at hand, deep flowed the tide of wickedness, to daunt me; 6 the toils of the grave were all about me, deadly snares had trapped my feet. 7 One cry to the Lord, in my affliction, one word of summons to my God, and he, from his sanctuary, listens to my voice; the complaint I make before him finds a hearing. 1 Locutus est autem David Domino verba carminis hujus in die qua liberavit eum Dominus de manu omnium inimicorum suorum, et de manu Saul. 2 Et ait:

Dominus petra mea, et robur meum, et salvator meus.
3
Deus fortis meus: sperabo in eum;
scutum meum, et cornu salutis meæ:
elevator meus, et refugium meum;
salvator meus: de iniquitate liberabis me.
4
Laudabilem invocabo Dominum,
et ab inimicis meis salvus ero.
5
Quia circumdederunt me contritiones mortis:
torrentes Belial terruerunt me.
6
Funes inferni circumdederunt me:
prævenerunt me laquei mortis.
7
In tribulatione mea invocabo Dominum,
et ad Deum meum clamabo:
et exaudiet de templo suo vocem meam,
et clamor meus veniet ad aures ejus.
8 καὶ ἐταράχθη καὶ ἐσείσθη ἡ γῆ καὶ τὰ θεμέλια τοῦ οὐρανοῦ συνεταράχθησαν καὶ ἐσπαράχθησαν ὅτι ἐθυμώθη κύριος αὐτοῖς 9 ἀνέβη καπνὸς ἐν τῇ ὀργῇ αὐτοῦ καὶ πῦρ ἐκ στόματος αὐτοῦ κατέδεται ἄνθρακες ἐξεκαύθησαν ἀ{P'} αὐτοῦ 10 καὶ ἔκλινεν οὐρανοὺς καὶ κατέβη καὶ γνόφος ὑποκάτω τῶν ποδῶν αὐτοῦ 11 καὶ ἐπεκάθισεν ἐπὶ Χερουβιν καὶ ἐπετάσθη καὶ ὤφθη ἐπὶ πτερύγων ἀνέμου 12 καὶ ἔθετο σκότος ἀποκρυφὴν αὐτοῦ κύκλῳ αὐτοῦ ἡ σκηνὴ αὐτοῦ σκότος ὑδάτων ἐπάχυνεν ἐν νεφέλαις ἀέρος 13 ἀπὸ τοῦ φέγγους ἐναντίον αὐτοῦ ἐξεκαύθησαν ἄνθρακες πυρός 14 ἐβρόντησεν ἐξ οὐρανοῦ κύριος καὶ ὁ ὕψιστος ἔδωκεν φωνὴν αὐτοῦ 15 καὶ ἀπέστειλεν βέλη καὶ ἐσκόρπισεν αὐτούς ἀστραπὴν καὶ ἐξέστησεν αὐτούς 16 καὶ ὤφθησαν ἀφέσεις θαλάσσης καὶ ἀπεκαλύφθη θεμέλια τῆς οἰκουμένης ἐν τῇ ἐπιτιμήσει κυρίου ἀπὸ πνοῆς πνεύματος θυμοῦ αὐτοῦ 17 ἀπέστειλεν ἐξ ὕψους καὶ ἔλαβέν με εἵλκυσέν με ἐξ ὑδάτων πολλῶν 18 ἐρρύσατό με ἐξ ἐχθρῶν μου ἰσχύος ἐκ τῶν μισούντων με ὅτι ἐκραταιώθησαν ὑπὲρ ἐμέ 19 προέφθασάν με ἐν ἡμέρᾳ θλίψεώς μου καὶ ἐγένετο κύριος ἐπιστήριγμά μου 20 καὶ ἐξήγαγέν με εἰς πλατυσμὸν καὶ ἐξείλατό με ὅτι εὐδόκησεν ἐν ἐμοί 8 Earth shivered and shook, the very foundations of the hills quailed and quaked before his anger; 9 smoke went up before his indignant presence, and a consuming fire; burning coals were kindled as he went. 10 He bade heaven stoop, and came down to earth, with mist at his feet; 11 he came, mounted on the cherubim, borne up on the wings of the wind, 12 shrouded in a pall of darkness, wringing out the rainstorm from the clouds of heaven; 13 burning coals were kindled by the lightning that went before him; 14 the Lord, sending his thunder from heaven, the Most High, letting his voice be heard. 15 How they scattered when he rained down his arrows on them, fled in confusion before his lightning! 16 The secret springs of ocean came to light, the very foundations of the world were laid bare, when the Lord threatened them, blew upon them with the breath of his anger. 17 Then he reached down from heaven, caught hold of me, 18 rescued me from that flood, saved me from triumphant malice, from the enemies that held me at their mercy. 19 In that evil day he came to my side; the Lord upheld me 20 and brought me out into freedom again; his great love befriended me. 8
Commota est et contremuit terra;
fundamenta montium concussa sunt, et conquassata:
quoniam iratus est eis.
9
Ascendit fumus de naribus ejus,
et ignis de ore ejus vorabit:
carbones succensi sunt ab eo.
10
Inclinavit cælos, et descendit:
et caligo sub pedibus ejus.
11
Et ascendit super cherubim, et volavit:
et lapsus est super pennas venti.
12
Posuit tenebras in circuitu suo latibulum,
cribrans aquas de nubibus cælorum.
13
Præ fulgore in conspectu ejus,
succensi sunt carbones ignis.
14
Tonabit de cælo Dominus,
et excelsus dabit vocem suam.
15
Misit sagittas et dissipavit eos;
fulgur, et consumpsit eos.
16
Et apparuerunt effusiones maris,
et revelata sunt fundamenta orbis
ab increpatione Domini,
ab inspiratione spiritus furoris ejus.
17
Misit de excelso, et assumpsit me,
et extraxit me de aquis multis.
18
Liberavit me ab inimico meo potentissimo,
et ab his qui oderant me:
quoniam robustiores me erant.
19
Prævenit me in die afflictionis meæ,
et factus est Dominus firmamentum meum.
20
Et eduxit me in latitudinem:
liberavit me, quia complacui ei.
21 καὶ ἀνταπέδωκέν μοι κύριος κατὰ τὴν δικαιοσύνην μου κατὰ τὴν καθαριότητα τῶν χειρῶν μου ἀνταπέδωκέν μοι 22 ὅτι ἐφύλαξα ὁδοὺς κυρίου καὶ οὐκ ἠσέβησα ἀπὸ τοῦ θεοῦ μου 23 ὅτι πάντα τὰ κρίματα αὐτοῦ κατεναντίον μου καὶ τὰ δικαιώματα αὐτοῦ οὐκ ἀπέστην ἀ{P'} αὐτῶν 24 καὶ ἔσομαι ἄμωμος αὐτῷ καὶ προφυλάξομαι ἀπὸ τῆς ἀνομίας μου 25 καὶ ἀποδώσει μοι κύριος κατὰ τὴν δικαιοσύνην μου καὶ κατὰ τὴν καθαριότητα τῶν χειρῶν μου ἐνώπιον τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν αὐτοῦ 26 μετὰ ὁσίου ὁσιωθήσῃ καὶ μετὰ ἀνδρὸς τελείου τελειωθήσῃ 27 καὶ μετὰ ἐκλεκτοῦ ἐκλεκτὸς ἔσῃ καὶ μετὰ στρεβλοῦ στρεβλωθήσῃ 28 καὶ τὸν λαὸν τὸν πτωχὸν σώσεις καὶ ὀφθαλμοὺς ἐπὶ μετεώρων ταπεινώσεις 29 ὅτι σὺ ὁ λύχνος μου κύριε καὶ κύριος ἐκλάμψει μοι τὸ σκότος μου 30 ὅτι ἐν σοὶ δραμοῦμαι μονόζωνος καὶ ἐν τῷ θεῷ μου ὑπερβήσομαι τεῖχος 21 And still as he sees me dutiful, the Lord will requite me; as he sees me guiltless in act, he will make return. 22 Have I not kept true to the Lord’s paths? Have I not been loyal to my God? 23 No law of his, but I have kept it before my eyes; no task he laid upon me have I refused; 24 ever stainless in his presence, ever watchful to keep myself clear of guilt. 25 Surely the Lord will requite me as he sees me dutiful, as he sees me guiltless in act. 26 Lovingly thou dost treat those who love thee, faithfully the courageous; 27 he that is thy own shall find thee his very own, from the man who turns against thee thou wilt turn away. 28 To humble folk thou wilt bring deliverance; the proud, with their haughty looks, thou wilt bring down to earth. 29 Thou, Lord, art the lamp of my hope; thou, Lord, dost shine on the darkness about me. 30 In thy strength I shall run well girded; in the strength of my God I will leap over a wall. 21
Retribuet mihi Dominus secundum justitiam meam:
et secundum munditiam manuum mearum reddet mihi.
22
Quia custodivi vias Domini,
et non egi impie a Deo meo.
23
Omnia enim judicia ejus in conspectu meo,
et præcepta ejus non amovi a me.
24
Et ero perfectus cum eo,
et custodiam me ab iniquitate mea.
25
Et restituet mihi Dominus secundum justitiam meam,
et secundum munditiam manuum mearum in conspectu oculorum suorum.
26
Cum sancto sanctus eris,
et cum robusto perfectus.
27
Cum electo electus eris,
et cum perverso perverteris.
28
Et populum pauperem salvum facies:
oculisque tuis excelsos humiliabis.
29
Quia tu lucerna mea, Domine,
et tu, Domine, illuminabis tenebras meas.
30
In te enim curram accinctus:
in Deo meo transiliam murum.
32 Who but the Lord is God? What other power can there be except our God? 33 It is he that girds me with strength, he that makes me go on a smooth way, untroubled. 34 He makes me sure-footed as the deer, and gives me the freedom of the hills; 35 these hands, through him, are skilled in battle, these arms are a match for any bow of bronze. 36 Thy saving power, Lord, is my defence, thy tender care fosters me. 37 Through thee, my steps are untrammelled as I go, foot of mine never falters; 38 I can master the enemies I pursue, and never turn home till I have made an end of them; 39 made an end of them, beating them to their knees, hurling them down at my feet. 40 Thou girdest me about with a warrior’s strength; whatever power challenges me thou dost subdue before me, 41 putting my enemies to flight, and throwing all their malice into confusion. 42 Loudly they cry out to the Lord, bereft of aid, but he makes no answer to their cries. 43 I can crush them to pieces, like dust on the ground, spurn and trample them like mire in the streets. 31
Deus, immaculata via ejus;
eloquium Domini igne examinatum:
scutum est omnium sperantium in se.
32
Quis est Deus præter Dominum,
et quis fortis præter Deum nostrum?
33
Deus qui accinxit me fortitudine,
et complanavit perfectam viam meam.
34
Coæquans pedes meos cervis,
et super excelsa mea statuens me;
35
docens manus meas ad prælium,
et componens quasi arcum æreum brachia mea.
36
Dedisti mihi clypeum salutis tuæ,
et mansuetudo tua multiplicavit me.
37
Dilatabis gressus meos subtus me,
et non deficient tali mei.
38
Persequar inimicos meos, et conteram,
et non convertar donec consumam eos.
39
Consumam eos et confringam, ut non consurgant:
cadent sub pedibus meis.
40
Accinxisti me fortitudine ad prælium:
incurvasti resistentes mihi subtus me.
41
Inimicos meos dedisti mihi dorsum;
odientes me, et disperdam eos.
42
Clamabunt, et non erit qui salvet;
ad Dominum, et non exaudiet eos.
43
Delebo eos ut pulverem terræ;
quasi lutum platearum comminuam eos atque confringam.
44 καὶ ῥύσῃ με ἐκ μάχης λαῶν φυλάξεις με εἰς κεφαλὴν ἐθνῶν λαός ὃν οὐκ ἔγνων ἐδούλευσάν μοι 45 υἱοὶ ἀλλότριοι ἐψεύσαντό μοι εἰς ἀκοὴν ὠτίου ἤκουσάν μου 46 υἱοὶ ἀλλότριοι ἀπορριφήσονται καὶ σφαλοῦσιν ἐκ τῶν συγκλεισμῶν αὐτῶν 47 ζῇ κύριος καὶ εὐλογητὸς ὁ φύλαξ μου καὶ ὑψωθήσεται ὁ θεός μου ὁ φύλαξ τῆς σωτηρίας μου 48 ἰσχυρὸς κύριος ὁ διδοὺς ἐκδικήσεις ἐμοί παιδεύων λαοὺς ὑποκάτω μου 49 καὶ ἐξάγων με ἐξ ἐχθρῶν μου καὶ ἐκ τῶν ἐπεγειρομένων μοι ὑψώσεις με ἐξ ἀνδρὸς ἀδικημάτων ῥύσῃ με 50 διὰ τοῦτο ἐξομολογήσομαί σοι κύριε ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν καὶ ἐν τῷ ὀνόματί σου ψαλῶ 51 μεγαλύνων σωτηρίας βασιλέως αὐτοῦ καὶ ποιῶν ἔλεος τῷ χριστῷ αὐτοῦ τῷ Δαυιδ καὶ τῷ σπέρματι αὐτοῦ ἕως αἰῶνος 44 Thou wilt deliver me, then, from sedition among my people; nay, thou hast a higher destiny for me yet, to rule over other nations, with alien folk for my subjects. 45 Aliens offering battle, and then brought to my allegiance, 46 so feeble have they grown, so hard pinched by distress! 47 Blessed be the living Lord who is my God, praised be the God who rescues me! 48 It is thou, my God, that bringest me redress, that grantest me dominion over my people, 49 that savest me from my enemies, so that I am high above the reach of their assaults, proof against their violence. 50 Then, Lord, I will give thee thanks in the hearing of all nations, singing in praise of thy name; 51 how powerful thou art to protect the king thou hast chosen, how merciful thou art towards him thou hast anointed, towards David, and David’s line for ever.[1] 44
Salvabis me a contradictionibus populi mei;
custodies me in caput gentium:
populus quem ignoro serviet mihi.
45
Filii alieni resistent mihi;
auditu auris obedient mihi.
46
Filii alieni defluxerunt,
et contrahentur in angustiis suis.
47
Vivit Dominus, et benedictus Deus meus,
et exaltabitur Deus fortis salutis meæ.
48
Deus qui das vindictas mihi,
et dejicis populos sub me.
49
Qui educis me ab inimicis meis,
et a resistentibus mihi elevas me:
a viro iniquo liberabis me.
50
Propterea confitebor tibi, Domine, in gentibus,
et nomini tuo cantabo:
51
magnificans salutes regis sui,
et faciens misericordiam christo suo David,
et semini ejus in sempiternum.
